Welcome - A COMPLETE LEARNING TOOL FOR ALL!
Ukrainian Art Song Project
The Ukrainian Art Song Project and the Musica Leopolis recording label were founded in 2004 with the dream of documenting and promoting the classical treasures of Ukrainian art song (See below: What is an art song?). The project is a ground-breaking initiative that aims to record and publish a veritable anthology of over 1,000 art songs by 30 of Ukraine’s greatest composers for distribution to the music world.
The ‘COMPLETE LEARNING TOOL’ provides 6 aids to master a song: a recording, a music score, a literal translation and transliteration with a pronunciation chart, and an audio spoken text. In addition, each song may be transposed into any key, for any voice.
This landmark project was envisioned and founded by acclaimed British bass-baritone Pavlo Hunka who, together with his wife Larysa, teamed up with composer and opera director Roman Hurko and with Roman Dzundza, artistic director and conductor of the Ivano-Frankivsk Philharmonic Orchestra, Ukraine, to produce the recordings.
The Project is managed by a volunteer Board based in Toronto and Ukraine that is responsible for fulfilling its aims and spearheading communication, fundraising and events.
We are supported by an international cast of artists together with a body of enthusiastic music lovers, who will leave an extraordinary musical legacy to the world.
Imagine being part of this!
What is an art song?
An art song is a classical, musical composition of a poem or prose, usually for solo voice and piano accompaniment. Each song depicts a dramatic moment in life and distinguishes itself from a folk song by summoning a richer, finer and more sophisticated palette of emotions and tonal colours.
